The Garden offers a wealth of opportunity for open-air exhibitions and activities both permanent and temporary.

Our Visual arts workshops (digital photography, watercolours) & horticultural masterclasses are popular and of course, the setting is truly inspirational. In addition, ‘Art in the Garden’ takes place over long weekend in may of each year.

Specially commissioned art works and installations throughout the Garden include:

Site without Geography - an artists multiple by Henna Asikainen

site-without-geography"Love makes you see a place differently, just as you hold differently an object that belongs to someone you love. If you know one landscape well, you will look at all the other landscapes differently. And if you learn to love one place, sometimes you can also learn to love another.”

Anne Michaels

After a long journey, a period of significant research and development Henna created a multiple artwork which focuses on the recreation of Claude glass – a small tinted, convex mirror designed for viewing landscapes. Such glasses were widely used by both artists and tourists to place themselves in landscapes. The distorted distancing of the image was considered to render the view ideal or picturesque.

This work reflects the Plant Hunters aesthetic and scientific approach to nature and their reactions to landscape as recorded in journals.

Price: £175 each.

A limited edition of 100, this work takes the form of a boxed set, each contains a Claude Glass and an information leaflet.

Plant Hunters

Hunters History

The Plant Hunters were not just botanists, they were adventurers and explorers. They had to be tough to survive the conditions they faced in far-flung corners of the world. They survived shipwrecks, sieges and slavery and battled with pirates, escaped convicts and hostile natives.
