Visitor Information

visitor-informationScotland has produced some of the most successful Plant Hunters in the world because they were backed by the great botanic gardens of Edinburgh and Kew, the Royal Horticultural Society as well as nursery gardens and wealthy collectors. There was also the advantage of the Empire, with its established trade routes, contacts and wealth of resources.

These very individuals who contributed so much to our modern gardens, and daily lives are relatively unsung heroes. Although several of them may be known to botanists, horticulturists and keen gardeners few people will have heard of the names of George Forrest, Francis Mason, David Douglas. Yet these men changed the world and affect your life to this day.

We hope you enjoy the Garden and find the information in this section useful. We welcome any suggestions you might have.

Plant Hunters

Hunters History

The Plant Hunters were not just botanists, they were adventurers and explorers. They had to be tough to survive the conditions they faced in far-flung corners of the world. They survived shipwrecks, sieges and slavery and battled with pirates, escaped convicts and hostile natives.
