The Plant Hunters were not just botanists, they were adventurers and explorers. They had to be tough to survive the conditions they faced in far-flung corners of the world. They survived shipwrecks, sieges and slavery and battled with pirates, escaped convicts and hostile natives.


They were real heroes of their time.



Archibald Menzies

Date of Birth - 1754

Archibald Menzies first went to school in Weem, he then worked for a time in the garden at Castle Menzies. This was followed by a period at the University of Edinburgh where he worked under Dr John Hope in the Botany Department. His brother William was later employed at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh. Archibald was commended for a herbarium collection he made of rare Scottish plants.

David Douglas

Date of Birth - 1798

Started as a gardener’s boy at Scone Palace for the Earl of Mansfield then to Sir Robert Preston at Valley Field in Fife to a garden noted for it’s exotics. Proved his potential and was allowed the use of an extensive botanical library. Went on to work under William Hooker at Glasgow Botanic Garden assisting with the collection of Scottish plants.
