Unsung heroes who have changed our world.
The Plant Hunters were not just botanists, they were adventurers and explorers. They had to be tough to survive the conditions they faced in far-flung corners of the world. They survived shipwrecks, sieges and slavery and battled with pirates, escaped convicts and hostile natives.
They were real heroes of their time.

Date of Birth - 1817
After studying medicine at Aberdeen, Lyall went on a voyage to Greenland on a whaling boat as the surgeon. He entered the Royal Navy in 1839 and was immediately appointed for service under Sir James Ross on an expedition to the Antarctic Regions. As assistant surgeon he had to make botanical collections.

Date of Birth - 1741
Started as his working life as a garden boy. 1760s he travelled to London where he got a gardening job at Kew which was the directed by Joseph Banks. In 1772 Captain Cook was preparing for his second great voyage of exploration. At this time Masson was appointed the first Kew plant collector and gained his passage to Cape Town South Africa with Captain Cook at the instance of the Admirality.
